The charm of watercolours lies in their vivid and fluid expression, but did you know you can take even more control over your watercolour work by using different watercolour mediums? These mediums allow you to create exciting effects and control the fluidity of the colours, opening up new possibilities for your artwork.
Watercolour mediums give you the opportunity to experiment and perfect your watercolour technique. They allow you to slow down the drying process, control colour flow, change texture and mask areas on the paper to preserve their original colour. This way, you can create more depth and visual interest in your watercolour work.
One important watercolour medium is Masking Fluid. It creates a thin protective layer on the paper, preserving certain areas in their original colour. It can be used to create distinctive details or to limit the spread of colour in certain areas. When the work is finished, the hidden areas can be gently rubbed away to reveal the underlying colour. Masking fluids are usually lightly tinted to make it more visible on white paper, but our range also includes a colourless masking fluid that prevents sensitive paper from smudging when rubbed off.
Another useful medium is Gum Arabic. It helps to control the flow of watercolours, making the paint rather thick and creamy and preventing it from spreading. Gum Arabic improves the bonding of watercolours to paper, helping to achieve better permanence. It also slows down the drying process, allowing you to blend and work with your colours for longer.
Another interesting watercolour medium is Ox Gall liquid, which is added to brush water couple of drops at a time. It is used as a wetting agent, which reduces the tension on the surface of the water, helping the paints to spread more evenly and smoothly, avoiding the formation of uneven patches of colour on paper. Amongst other things, the use of liquid can achieve better separation and a clearer line between different colours. Ox Gall liquid helps to maintain watercolour brushes by removing paint residues from the hairs.
